The medical term for high BP is "hypertension". The medical abbreviation for it that I was taught to use in medical charts, was HTN.
I was first diagnosed with hypertension by a cardiologist in spring of 2001 after she ran a series of diagnostic tests.
Did you know that pain elevates
your blood pressure?
I was put on a blood pressure medicine known as Metoprolol (ma-tope-row-lall).
It is a beta blocker which, I am not educated to explain; I was really strong, healthy and still thin in 2001 when I first got diagnosed with HTN. Thus, I didn't care to learn about something that by and large only required me to take a small dose of an Rx daily, that had no obvious side effects.
A couple of years later, I became a power walking fiend and thanks to my long legs and high energy, I did 5 miles in 50 minutes, five and six days a week.
Once I began that routine, I was actually able to CEASE my BP Rx altogether because this regular aerobic exercise took my BP back to its former safe, low normal rate!
Thus, if you suffer HTN and can get into a daily walking routine, DO! I didn't start off at 5 miles. I walked as far as I could go and when that was no longer challenging, I kept increasing the distance.
If you are depressed, you should also try to get into a regular excercise routine.
In just a few months, I got up to 5 miles and found that the perfect distance to rid myself of life's stress.
When chronic pain became a part of my life, doctors kept increasing my BP Rx because of my elevated BP readings. Eventually, I was put on its max dose of 100mg BID (BID means twice daily) and when the effort of just getting a shower and washing my hair, left me depleted of all energy for the rest of the day, that is when I finally learned that one of Metoprolol's side effect is depression.
It's awful. When you sustain a disabling injury that impacts every area of a human's existence, (physical, mental, emotional, financial, social, and spiritual), you will find it more common than not, to become clinically depressed.
Thus, taking a medication with this side effect, is only adding to your problems. Obviously though, having a heart attack or stroke from not being on a good BP Rx, is a worse option.
Thus, I thought I had no choice and I dealt with this double depressive whammy from 2007 until 2014. Then I finally realized that after all of these years, surely, someone created a better BP Rx? Yep! Please click my link below for Dr. Fo Chalkias (Cardio) page under Western Medicine to read what pill I now take and how much better I feel!
Most importantly, even if you don't endure chronic pain but you do suffer from depression and high blood pressure, please, read your BP Rx pharmacology sheet to see if depression is a possible side effect for your BP Rx. If it is, ask your doc if switching to this new med is an option for you so that you can feel your absolute best while still protecting your body from the risks of hypertension.

Speaking of Depression...
STOP Hitting Yourself In The Head With a Hammer!
I know many people who are clinically depressed but are not chronic pain people.
Some take prescription medications for it; some do not.
Surprisingly, many, drink to excess. Then, unsurprisingly, they become deeply depressed and negative.
They cry, they hate themselves, they suffer. It's almost as bad to witness as it is for them to experience because you know as you watch them fall into despair that you can't stop it.
I believe that there are two types of problems in this life. One is being a victim of circumstances and the other, is being a victim of ourselves. We are all both at times.
The thing is, once you realize that you are your own worst enemy for doing this, you should exercise common sense and discipline and not drink at all, let alone, to excess. (If you are an alcoholic then you know you shouldn't even have just one.)
Let's face it, we humans can turn into crying blithering idiots when drunk, without being clinically depressed! So why the heck put yourself in that position if you know that you are???
Look, if you have a chemical imbalance that predisposed you to depression, you can't help that. But you can choose to not drink.
Let me put it another way. If you had a horrible headache, would you pick up a hammer and whack yourself in the head with it???
I think not. Drinking, when you suffer from depression is basically the same unhealthy, painful choice.
I used to love to go to happy hour, have cocktails at home, invite friends over for dinner and drinks, etc...but when chronic pain and multiple pain related Rx's came into the picture, I could no longer drink.
It wasn't even because of my depression, it was simply that I knew it was stupid to mix prescription drugs with alcohol.
Additionally, it was the rule when on all pain Rx's that I've taken* that I would get nauseated.
Thus, the last thing I was going to do was add to that horrid feeling. Plus, even if my pain pills didn't cause nausea, my super strong daily anti-inflammatory already exposes me to terrible things like a bleeding stomach so why the hell would I add alcohol to the mix?
Thus, I went years not being able to drink as the rule. I missed it; and on occasion, I'd take a sip of someone's beer, and it wouldn't taste right or good anymore.
Where there's a will, there's a way! In lieu of drinking, I'd buy a bottle of my favorite white wine and instead of having an actual glass, I'd pour some into a butter, olive oil and garlic sauce while sauteeing fresh mushrooms for pasta. It gave just enough of its flavor to make me feel less ripped off by the widespread limitations that chronic pain and being on pain pills, forces upon a person.
Since I don't believe in wasting money, I'd use the rest of the wine up by making cheese fondue a couple of times over the next few days.
When I went herbal as the rule in 2012, I couldn't wait to be "like a real person" again and enjoy an ice cold beer on a hot summer day!
I had lost my drinking skills! (Tolerance) I found that I buzzed severely off of just two light beers! I realized it was to be expected but it was still surprised me.
I have also discovered now that my glucose (blood sugar) is not where I want it to be, due to being fat and living a sedentary life, that if I have even just one of my beloved Southern Comfort, it leaves me feeling lousy immediately.
Thus, if you are actually a diabetic, make sure that you check with your dr. about alcohol because it is vital to keep yourself from the destruction that uncontrolled diabetes wreaks on a body.
*Nucynta is the only pain pill that never made me nauseated. If you too have this lousy side effect from pain pills, please ask your dr. if Nucynta is an option for you. Read more about it on these Spinal Trap pages:
