Dr. Kris Webb of NeuroTexas

I first met Dr. Webb in the summer of 2009 for a spinal surgical consult.  Dr. Webb was my 6th, yes, 6th, surgical consult.

I kept going because I couldn't find any two surgeons to give me the same surgical opinion.

I found that highly concerning because we only get one spine so if you pick the wrong procedure and/or the wrong surgeon, you can spend your life on it.

Don't get me wrong, I know that different schools and even, different time periods of going to medical school, means, different teachings and different opinions don't necessarily mean bad opinions; but they can indeed, equal less wellness success for a chronic pain sufferer, or any patient, surgical or otherwise.

The closest two of them came to recommending anything similar for my invasive spinal surgery needs, was when an ortho told me he'd do my spinal surgery and cut me in the back of my neck to remove some of my herniated cervical spinal disks and then fuse me.

Dr. Webb, a neurosurgeon, told me that he'd cut me in the front of my neck to do this procedure.

I said to him "Okay, this is the closest two of you have been in your recommendations; but the ortho said he'd cut into the back of my neck and you are saying the front, so, which is better and why?"

Dr. Webb replied: "Definitely the front incision is better for you because there are far more muscles and nerves in the back, which means a much more painful recovery and longer healing process."

That is the moment that I knew I'd found the right surgeon
to cut into my spine,
because he was doing
what's best for me.

Those four little words, "what's best for me"
are the main ones that every person needs to remember when it comes to their health and healing.

Your surgery, your health, your wellness, your pain, your pain relief, IS ABOUT YOU and NO ONE ELSE, including your doctors.

What is best for one, is not best for all.

Healing, in-pt/out-pt surgeries,  prescriptions, herbs, etc...needs vary person to person.

But one thing that we all have in common is that if you sustain a spinal injury serious enough to warrant invasive surgery, you have suffered more than enough pain so why in the world, would you choose a surgeon whose procedure means more pain afterwards?

Even if temporary?

Especially when it takes one full year for all nerves, tendons, ligaments, etc...to fully heal.

Additionally, when you have a surgery for which paralysis is a more likely possibility with or without the right procedure and/or surgeon, I assure you, figuring out who to trust, is a challenge that you need to take as much time as it takes until your gut, tells you, "THIS IS MY SURGEON!"

God gave us instincts for a reason and that reason is protection/self-preservation, so follow yours, please.  I have finally learned to listen to mine much better than ever before and I am grateful for that, because every time I didn't in the past, I lived to regret it.  Not everyone does though...

About Dr. Webb

Dr. Kris Webb is every bit as great of a person, as he is, a talented neurosurgeon.

He is innately kind, patient, and soothing in his soft spoken, quietly confident demeanor.

He is also something else that you rarely see in a surgeon of his caliber, humble.

No God complex, hooray!

All of these traits translates into treating his patients with respect.

Mutual respect is the essential requirement in all successful relationships; personal and professional.

If you truly want to enjoy your best health, having it for and from your doctors, is as essential to your good health as a good night's sleep.

Even though the patient/surgeon (or doctor) relationship isn't personal, trusting someone to cut into your spine is very personal.

Reasonable Expectations:

One thing every patient needs to have going into any surgery, is, reasonable expectations.

When I met with Dr. Webb in November of 2011 I had been in a year-long pain flareup that left me deeply frustrated and considering having him go back in to remove the other 2  herniated discs in my neck.

During that consult I said to him "I am going to continue with conservative treatment and get three more pain management procedures first, but if they do not give me the relief I seek, then I want you to cut me open again and if you could even just get me to a consistent pain level 3, for me, that would be like being pain free, and I can live with that, not that I don't wish to be pain free mind you, I'm just saying with all of my neck damage, I don't expect you to be able to get me pain-free."

Dr. Webb nodded and said "And that is exactly why I respect you because you have reasonable expectations and many patients don't, we can do the best surgery possible on someone, but it doesn't mean that we can always get them to be pain-free, so your goal of a three is a good one and one I'm happy to aim for it, and your plan to try conservative measures first, is also good."

He then said "Personally if I had to live with a chronic pain level 3, I'd go crazy."

I said "And that is exactly why I respect you, because most doctors won't even acknowledge something like that, so thank you for saying that."

Like I said, HUMBLE!

Dr. Webb isn't just a talented neurosurgeon and great person, but he has a healing spirit and that, (if you appreciate things like that), is to his patients advantage because a healing mind and heart equals, healing hands cutting into you and doing your surgery.

I will always be grateful beyond words for the successful procedure that he did on my spine and for the equally stellar treatment he provides to me on a human level.

If you need a surgical consult for your spine, I can't speak highly enough of Dr. Kris Webb.  If you don't live in Austin, he is worth the trip.

When Bad Health Situations Are A Blessing in Disguise

If you read the "About Dr. Webb" article in the column on the left, you may be interested to know that the three additional pain management procedures were clearly, not meant to be.

Due to the chronic severe pain I was having in 2011, I got put on a second blood pressure pill called Lisinopril.

(Did you know that pain elevates your blood pressure?)

I didn't yet know it but I was having a severe reaction to it.

Before I got that figured out, I developed diverticulitis.

I just got these issues resolved and, before I could proceed with scheduling, I fell and broke my foot in two places!

That fall flared my spinal shoulder pain as well.

Needless to say I got fed up.

While laid up with my broken foot, I did my research to go herbal and did so quite successfully; thus, negating the need at that time, to continue pain management and/or its procedures.

Please see my "Herbs" home page to learn what 2 herbs and 1 digestive enzyme, got me back 2 good!
