Western Medicine

In the United States, we are programmed from birth to go to the doctors.  Got a cough/cold?  Better run and get an Rx for antibiotics.  I know this because I used to be like that.

We are also programmed to not dare question our doctors.  Thing is, the good ones are very bright and knowledgeable, but they are not omnipotent; if they were, there'd be no such thing as medical mistakes, malpractice and related lawsuits.

Thus, you need to listen to what they have to say, and then you need to trust your God given instincts.  When in doubt, get more than one opinion, remove emotion from the picture and make sound decisions based upon the information you received and what your gut tells you.

In reality, depending upon the issue, running to the doc's should be the last choice because we have people today who overtake antibiotics and as a result, become resistant to their benefits.

Come on people!  This means that if and when you ever truly need them for what could be a life or death emergency, you may have an immunity to them that costs you your life.

That's absurd!  Especially when garlic is an anti-bacterial, an anti-fungal and has many, many, MANY other wonderful preventive properties to help the human body.

Prior to discovering its immense value, I used to get strep, the flu, upper respiratory infections, etc...every year, and often, twice a year.  Spring of 2001 I got an upper respiratory infection; after which I was told to take garlic and I'd just not get sick.  Et voila, it was true!

I could be around anyone hacking, coughing, spitting, sneezing and I'd pile up on garlic and at most, get mild symptoms for 24 hours, if even at all.  Stupidly, I let myself run out of garlic and ended up with my first flu in almost 12 years, in 2013.

TWELVE YEARS.

When is the last time that you went 12 years without a bad cold, strep, flu, upper respiratory infection?

If "never" is your answer, then I strongly recommend that you get on fresh garlic and buy "Nature Made" brand garlic supplement.

(See picture below.)

When I am around anyone sick, I will take one of these supplements every 4 hours while awake to boost my immunity.

I've tried other brands but can only recommend this one as the absolute best.

Those who have taken my advice to eat fresh garlic after they are already miserably sick have all consistently reported back that their symptoms subsided immensely within just 24 hours!

When I finally got sick again, all I could think was that I hadn't missed that misery!

I also discovered that despite not being on Rx's as the rule anymore, I had been for so long, that OTC night time cough syrup, no longer actually made me sleep.

I appreciate, respect and have benefitted from the advances that modern medicine has made on many fronts; but thanks to being only 4/10 on benefitting from pain control procedures* and  my numerous self-help and alternative medicine successes, I and millions of others who have realized the power of certain herbs, no longer run to the doctors for every ailment, or even, our chronic pain, depression, anxiety, etc...

Is the potential harm from anesthesia and steroids, worth just 60 days of pain relief; if you even get any pain relief?

*The last pain surgeon that did 5 procedures on me, is an EXCELLENT dr. and I do not blame him for my body not responding to well as the rule, to his efforts.

I believe there are two possible reasons why I only ever got complete relief from one of them.

One is that I don't think my body responds well to steroids.  Since that is was is injected during these procedures, and it isn't something naturally manufactured by the body and/or required by the body to be its best, it just makes sense to consider that distinct possibility.

Especially when I had two other pain surgeons each do this type of effort and I got N.I. (no improvement) from one, and the other, actually made me worse for 48 hours.

The other reason I believe these efforts to not be as successful as desired, is that I have so much damage of multiple types, in my neck, i.e. a flattened spinal cord that leaked fluid, 2 herniated discs remaining, osteophytes (bone spurs), nerve root impingement, kyphosis, degenerative disc disease, weak ligaments, muscles, severe arthritis, etc...that I believe no one medicine or effort is able to truly address all of those various types of body structures to calm them all down.

Thus, successful pain management for people like me is not about just one thing but rather EVERYTHING that we can do to have a balanced mind, body and spirit.

I don't need to have M.D. after my name for that to make sense.

The pain control procedure that he did which greatly helped my L-Spine disc herniations and resulting sciatica pain was called a "Medial Branch Block".

It gave me COMPLETE relief for exactly 2 months to the day.  Then we moved.  Tell me how to pack and unpack boxes without bending over...needless to say, pain flared as if I never had the procedure.

Though I truly was grateful for even the temporary relief, I can't help but wonder: is the benefit of such temporary relief, worth whatever the risks are of being put under and having steroids injected into the body?

If you have had out-pt pain control procedures done and wish to share your perspective, please email me: grace@spinaltrapb2g.com

Below is a picture of the brand I recommend for a garlic supplement.

I have to tell you, it never ceases to amaze me when people asked me "Will it give me garlic breath?"  WHO CARES!  When you are sick and full of bacteria or a virus, your breath ain't exactly sweet like candy, now is it???

Are You Ready To Hear Great Advice?

We can be given the best advice in the world, but if we aren't ready to hear it and follow it, it's useless.

To benefit from great advice, one must ACT upon it accordingly.

Thinking back as I created this page, I realized that I have an Italian friend who told me when I was only 19 years old that he never gets sick thanks to eating fresh garlic cloves regularly...clearly, I wasn't yet ready to be as healthy as possible, as naturally as possible.  I hope that you are!

Meatloaves and
Medical Opinions

I used to cater professionally. I love to cook and my sister's homemade meatloaf was a popular, weekly sell out special.

One of the countless things that this experience taught me, aside from that everyone's a food critic, even those whose normal diet consists of microwaving corn dogs, frozen tacos and ramen noodles... is that meatloaf recipes are extremely subjective!

Meaning, all of us have subjects on which we are knowledgeable and many more, on which we know nothing, or not enough.

Thus, when you need an opinion, especially one as important as health related, you need to do three things:

1.  Confirm that your source is a good one.

2.  Get more than one opinion.

3.  Form your own opinion/decisions based upon FACTS that you learn from a REPUTABLE source and what YOUR GUT tells you.  After all, it's not just for enjoying great food...

If you ask 100 people for their meatloaf recipe, I promise you, you will get no two recipes, exactly the same.
What this means is that if you make all 100 different recipes, the probability is high that you will find a few that you think are fantastic, many that are good, and some that make you sorry you took one bite.  That's life; and so it goes too, with chronic pain and Western medicine.
If you have multiple areas of damage like I do, you may find yourself seeking multiple medical opinions because it is far more challening to address, than the straightforwardness of "just" muscle pain or just disc pain or just nerve damage pain, etc...I and millions of others, have them all and more.
This makes managing our pain, not about "just" one thing to be done that successfully reduces and/or eliminates that one type of pain, but literally about everything I/we can do and not do, to not flare the multiple areas of damage and resulting pain.

Once severe spinal damage and chronic pain became a constant in my life, I saw many doctors in two different states.
Neurosurgeons, Neurologists, Orthopaedic surgeons, Pain Management surgeons, Doctors of Osteopathy, Chiropractors and even, a "Physiatrist" (Pronounced Fa-sci-a tryst)

No, I don't mean psychiatrist. A physiatrist is a sports medicine related type doctor who to the best of my recollection, specializes in body mechanics, range of motion, functionality, etc...

Though they all held different specialties, they were all qualified to examine and treat me. They also all gave me their own professional opinions for my treatment plan to reduce and/or eliminate my pain.

Like meatloaf recipes, no two medical opinions were ever exactly alike and let's face it, a treatment plan is essentially a recipe for your best health.

Unlike varying meatloaf recipes however, I found a lack of consistent medical opinions, concerning, confusing, and frustrating.

Don't get me wrong, I know that different schools and even, different time periods of going to medical school, means, different teachings and different opinions don't necessarily mean, bad opinions; but they can indeed, equal less wellness success for a chronic pain sufferer.

The closest two of them came to recommending anything similar for my invasive surgery needs, was when an ortho told me he'd do my spinal surgery and cut me in the back of my neck to remove some of my herniated cervical spinal disks and then fuse me. The neuro told me he'd cut me in the front of my neck to do this procedure. When I saw the neuro, who was my 6th surgical consult because I trusted my instincts and kept seeking surgical opinions, I said to him "Okay, this is the closest two of you have been in your recommendations; but the ortho said he'd cut into the back of my neck and you are saying the front, so, which is better and why?"

Dr. Kris Webb of NeuroTexas in Austin, TX replied: "Definitely the front incision is better for you because there are far more muscles and nerves in the back, which means a much more painful recovery and longer healing process."

That is the moment I knew I'd found the right surgeon to cut into my spine; because he was doing what was best for me.

Those words are the main ones that every person needs to remember when it comes to their health and healing.

What is best for one, is not best for all. Healing, in-pt/out-pt surgeries,  prescriptions, herbs, etc...needs vary person to person. But one thing that we all have in common is that if you sustain a spinal injury serious enough to warrant invasive surgery, you have suffered more than enough pain so why in the world, would you choose a surgeon whose procedure means more pain afterwards? Even if temporary?

Especially when it takes one full year for all nerves, tendons, ligaments, etc...to fully heal.

Additionally, when you have a condition for which paralysis is a real possibility with or without the right procedure, I assure you, figuring out who to trust, is a challenge that you can't truly appreciate unless you go through it.

And I send love and blessings out to all who read this that you never have to know this situation if you haven't already been through it and ask you to realize that every time you pick up your cell phone to talk or text while driving, you exponentially increase the likelihood that you will injure yourself and/or others and possibly learn the realities of paralysis or its potential.

PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN SO YOU CAN WATCH OUT FOR THOSE WHO WON'T!

My goals for Spinal Trap are as much about injury prevention as it is for making your best recovery. It's simple, decrease your risk of injury and crashes by being diligent, not distracted, when driving.

In closing, I used the analogy of meatloaves, not to diminish doctors and the vital role they play in our good health, but because unless you are a strict vegetarian, you have likely eaten meatloaf in your lifetime.   If you are a meat and potatoes guy or gal, probably, countless times.

Thus, I wanted to use a widely relatable example to drive home the difference in doctors and their techniques. Being a foodie, I often use food analogies, so get used to it!

Speaking of Great Advice...

I finally succeeded in reading the bible for the first time in 2014.  What an eye opening blessing!

Jesus spoke in parables in the New Testament and when the disciples asked why some people didn't understand, He replied:

Matthew 13:12-15

"To those who are open to my teaching, more understanding will be given, and they will have an abundance of knowledge. But to those who are not listening, even what they have will be taken away from them. 13That is why I tell these stories, because people see what I do, but they don't really see. They hear what I say, but they don't really hear, and they don't understand. 14This fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah, which says:

'You will hear my words,

but you will not understand;

you will see what I do,

but you will not perceive its meaning.

15For the hearts of these people are hardened,

and their ears cannot hear,

and they have closed their eyes--

so their eyes cannot see,

and their ears cannot hear,

and their hearts cannot understand,

and they cannot turn to me

and let me heal them.'

Did you know that Luke, author of Luke in the New Testament, was a medical doctor?  If you need surgery, include St. Luke in your prayers for he is the patron saint over physicians and surgeons.
