Crack in a Cup:

Chronic Pain Friend or Foe?

In my world, I am referring to strong coffee, not true crack; because for all of my pain and life's problems, never once have I said to myself "Gee, I bet if I snort or shoot up illegal street drugs, I will feel so much better!".  Thus, I refer to super strong coffee.

What is fascinating to me is how ever since Starbucks coffee came along, it has indeed, become its own class of addiction to many. I did love little mom and pop coffee houses but Starbucks did not get rich off of me.

I thought it too strong, nasty tasting and just didn't care about being hip, enough to waste $5 for the iced caramel drink that is the only thing they make that I have had a few of over the years.

I did however, used to drink pots and pots of coffee when I worked in hospitality management; because the irony is, its schedules are anything but hospitable to its managers, banquet managers in particular, since breakfast banquets start as early as 6am and weddings go as late as 2am.

I worked at a hotel once that had a policy, that if an employee had less than 8 hours between shifts, and there were available rooms, they were to be given a free room upon request.

As the Banquet Manager, needless to say, my boys Baby and Bear (dogs) and I, spent a lot of time in a comped room because it was quite common for me to work until 3am in the ballroom helping to tear down a wedding that just ended 1 hour earlier and have to re-set for bar and bat mitzvah breakfasts slated to begin at 7am.

This meant I had about 1 hour to walk the boys, feed them breakfast, shower and sleep before being back at it.  Hence, my coffee consumption wasn't an addiction, so much as a necessity to stay employed...

At some point, our Catering Sales Director decided to go Starbucks with our banquet coffee. We got so many complaints about its bitter, strong taste that we got rid of it just as fast; I was elated!

After all, it was our banquet coffee that I drank pots and pots of but when we briefly used Starbucks, I was challenged to put down one cup, let alone cup after cup. This was in the late 90's.

Fast forward to 2014. I recently ran out of my preferred "sissy flavored non crack in a cup but still caffeinated coffee" and used a friend's Starbucks Gold Coast beans in Turkish grind for a couple of weeks.

Now, I weaned myself years ago off of having pots of coffee and have just one 8oz cup, every morning.  Thus, I had just one of this crack in a cup stuff before a recent new patient consult.

I told the dr. of my spinal damage and how sitting always hurts, but that due to elevated L-spine pain, I couldn't find relief even when standing or lying down, so please, bear with me as I paced around her office.

I talked a mile a minute despite my severe pain;
usually, the greater my pain, the slower my speech.

Not knowing if she would want to run tests, all I'd had to eat that entire day was yogurt. I didn't take my anti-inflammatory or a pain pill so that I would be as alert as possible. Oh yeah, that wasn't an issue...
The next morning, I again had one 8oz mug of the Gold Coast.
At some point, I swear to you, I felt like if I flapped my  arms I could've flown around my house!
Go ahead, laugh, it does sound funny, but it doesn't feel funny or good.

I needed to not feel so hyped up.
There is a huge difference between
feeling energized and feeling hyped up.
The former feels good, the latter does not.

Which, considering how disgusted I am about how much chronic pain has depletes my former "energizer bunny mode", is saying a lot about the power of this crack in a cup.

I noticed however in the last few years that if and when I drank a stronger cup of coffee, it seemed to have an effect on my pain.

What I don't know,
is does it actually have
an impact on reducing pain;
or is it simply that
a super strong brew will hype a body up
so much that a person gets a
higher than average caffeine kick that allows them to push through pain?

Thus, I began reading various links online to find out. I've included them below for your own review. In a nutshell, as with all subjects, there are opposing opinions.

As with anything important to your pain management and relief, you should do your own research,
form your own opinion and try if safe for you.

When I got my first migraine at age 19, the dr. told me that if I got a migraine and didn't have my Rx's with me, I was to consume the strongest caffeinated beverage that I could find because caffeine would make the blood vessels in my head dilate and this release would bring immediate pain relief.

Click this link to learn how I no longer suffer daily headaches or migraines since getting on this vitamin every morning!

http://www.spinaltrapb2g.com/self-help_healing_modalities/b_energetic

Chronic pain however, from spinal cord, herniated discs, ligament, musle and other damage, is a FAR different animal
than acute pain.

Thus, I try everything reasonable that I can, and believe more people would enjoy reduced pain if they too tried everything that is safe for them.

Your body will tell you what works
for you and what does not.

Not every pain pill or surgery procedure yields the same results in chronic pain patients seeking relief.  Thus, it follows that not every natural effort will yield the desired results either; but until you try, you can't know. So, get motivated and get some "crack in a cup" caffeinated coffee and see if you feel better!

*****WARNING*****

IF you have a heart condition, hypertension and/or any other health issues for which your dr. has advised you against consuming strong caffeinated beverages, PLEASE talk with them first about the feasibility of you trying one 8oz or smaller cup of such coffee to gauge whether or not it can help you with your chronic pain challenges.

I have found a happy compromise
that I hope works for you too!
I still make my flavored coffee
but I sprinkle lightly a 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon
of cracked out coffee on top of it.
That way, I get more energy
than I normally would
but not to the degree
of being hyped up in a negative way!

Attention Servers

& Bartenders:

PLEASE DON'T

BE LAZY

as I have seen done

and give a customer

caffeinated coffee

when they asked you

for decaf!

Make another pot and just let them know that you are making them a fresh pot of decaf so it'll be a couple of minutes.

They'll be grateful

to wait,

especially if they

have a heart

condition and/or

hypertension

(a.k.a. high blood pressure)

that is the reason

why they NEED

decaf.

Even if it's not, if that is what they asked for, that is what they get; after all, it's called "the service industry" for a reason.

If your attitude isn't service oriented, don't work in the service industry.  You'll be happier and so will those to whom you would have given bad service!

Be Grateful, Be Well
