This beautiful Eskie baby of mine was named "Gypsy" by Adopt A Rescue Pet; the rescue group from whom I adopted her.
She was already 8-10 years old and had bilateral burst retinas which meant decreased vision. Having worked for eye docs and surgeons I had a lot of extra love and compassion for visual challenges and I knew she was mine immediately.
I only had her for 7 months because she had to be put down on Christmas Day due to an inoperable bladder tumor.
It wasn't known that she had one when I rescued her. She started leaking urine and I took her to the vet's and got her on Proin but not having a dog with this issue before, I didn't realize it was a symptom of something far more sinister than some weak kegel muscles as had originally been diagnosed.
Instead of focusing on the tumor and its pain that she had to be in, I wish to focus on the lesson Gypsy taught; and that was, to smile even when it hurts. I must admit, it took me far too long to get there when battling my own pain issues; but I eventually did and I am grateful.
Life can be unimaginably tough and smiling even tougher. But as I found out when I finally tried it, on the days that I felt bad and forced myself to smile, it eventually wasn't forced and I would feel better mentally and emotionally.
Interestingly, smiling didn't necessarily always improve my physical pain; but getting upset about it,
guaranteed worsening it.
Hmm, what does that tell you about the intrinsic mind, body, spirit connection?
A LOT!
So take a lesson from one of God's best gifts to us and smile, even when it hurts. If you truly can't, try making a list of things for which you can at least be grateful. I promise if you switch your focus to gratitude, you will still feel better.

If you've never had or been around American Eskimos, you don't realize how utterly beautiful they are and how great their smiles are!
They are also known as "heart bandits" because they steal your heart!
Very true!
Gypsy is the only Eskie I had who has the tear stains. Please know they are completely avoidable with very little but daily effort.
Every morning when I wake up, the first thing I do is wipe the eyes of my current rescue eskie "Scottie".
That's it.
As you can see,
he has no tear stains.
Rescues are so overwhelmed by people who toss pets aside like shoes they no longer want that they just don't have the time to stay on top of such things.
If your pet has tear stains with crusting, use a clean washcloth or simply fold up a paper towel and run it under very warm water and then lay it on the crust to let it soften and then wipe gently back and forth until the matter falls off or you can easily wipe it off with your finger.
If you love animals, please volunteer at your local shelter.
There are many needs to be filled and animals to love!
