I have done various types of volunteer work for non-profits, including two different dog rescues. It was always a rewarding experience!
The only people that don't have time to volunteer are those who work and go to school F/T or work 80 hours a week, every week.
They are not the majority; thus, if you are reading this, YOU likely have time to volunteer!
Please volunteer even if you suffer chronic pain because it is a wonderful, positive and healthy distraction that will benefit you as much as the animals who need your love.
Bottom line, if you have time to watch a plethora of reality shows, or as bad, spend hours a day on worthless Facebook, you have plenty of time to volunteer.
Go to your local shelter and ask what areas they need help in.
Figure out which you can handle, and a schedule that you can honor, and sign up!
We are all wired differently so take into consideration what you know you can handle and do well; and then try to get duties that suit your skill level/personality.
But please realize that volunteer work isn't about you, it's about the needs of the organization.
Thus, if you truly want to help, although it is smart to try and find duties that you are good at and enjoy, the more important point is doing what they need.
Doing stuff that you don't like, but that benefits others, is good for you and will help you grow as a person.
If you don't like people, work in the back cleaning cages.
If you're shy, offer to walk the dogs and play with them to get them out of their cages and help them to become socialized.
JUST LIKE HUMANS dogs need regular interaction too!
If you are a social butterfly, help them organize fundraising events and do marketing.
If you're code/computer savvy, offer to update their website.
Remember, your presence is a commitment of invaluable measure to them.
If you say that you can only be there once a month for 4 hours on a Saturday, that's fine, BE THERE!
*****Good intentions do not count on this subject people.
Non-profits would rather have 20 volunteers who they can unfailingly count on to show up for half a day, once a month, that actually do show, with a good attitude, as scheduled, then for 200 people to overextend themselves and not show; or show but get frustrated and cranky with others while there.
So remember, if you are going to volunteer, the whole point is to be a blessing, not a burden!
Don't cancel.
Don't show up with a bad attitude. If you don't understand what you are to do, admit it! There's no shame in saying so, but you will be humiliated if you don't ask and then create a huge, dangerous, or irreversible problem.
If you realize that you are not enjoying what you signed up for, be an adult, find the volunteer coordinator and simply say that your experience is not what you expected and would it be possible to utilize your skills of A, B, C, elsewhere in their organization?
But finish out the commitment you made if they are counting on you for that day or week.
