Why You Should Back Your Car Into Parking Spaces & Your Garage
If and when you sustain a serious cervical (neck) spine injury and can't turn your head without pain, or perhaps, at all, I can't tell you how much being able to back your car into parking spaces, will save you and others, not just in pain and frustrations, but literally, because when you first pull up to a parking space, you have the most clear view of who is around, including little kids, that are not visible when backing out!
This means that you can far more safely and comfortably, back in, then back out.
Backing out involves wayyyyy more head turning and/or body twisting to try and make sure no one is in your blind spots.
I was fortunate that when my dad taught me to drive he made me learn to park by backing our station wagon in.
In case you're young enough to not know what that is, it's the "mini van" vehicle for large families in the 70's.
Thus, I've always parked that way as the rule.
Now that my neck is fused?
It is a huge blessing!
So many people act like it is tough to do; it's not.
If you practice it enough, you will get better at it.
If you don't intend to learn, then all you have to do is drive far enough up the lot until you can pull straight through one space into the next, so that you are facing out!
WARNING:
PLEASE BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS WHEN DOING SO that another vehicle isn't about to turn into that same space and doesn't see you due to huge SUVs that can block their view of you, until you're front bumpers meet...
Quick Backing in
Parking Tip:
When you first practice this, please, do it in a parking lot where no else is parked on either side of your target spot...
First, make sure that your side mirrors are adjusted accordingly; and if you are not used to using them, you soon will be because they are essential to ensuring successful backing in parking.
Once you decide which side you are backing into, pull your vehicle down so that the back bumper is parallel with the first line of the parking spot.
Then simply turn your wheel accordingly and just use your side mirrors to make sure that you are pulling in evenly.
Until you get really smooth at it, just go slow.
You aren't trying to win a contest, you're trying to make your life easier, and as much, your odds of hitting someone or something, far less!
Again, don't rush.
When I train people in anything of importance I always tell them:
"Don't worry about being fast, worry about being accurate because speed automatically comes with time!"
*****IMPORTANT*****
When backing into a space, if the space behind you already has a trucked in it THAT IS ALSO BACKED IN, ALWAYS ASSUME THAT THAT IT HAS A TRAILER HITCH ON IT BECAUSE IF IT DOES AND YOU DON'T ALLOW FOR THAT POSSIBILITY, YOU WILL HIT IT AND VERY LIKELY CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR CAR.
Backing your car into your garage so that you have a full view of the sidewalk and street is also another smart way to avoid unnecessary injuries and tragedies; especially if you live somewhere that has a lot of little kids and dogs running around, unsupervised.
Why else do you think UPS and other truck drivers always back in or pull through so that they don't have to be in reverse???

A Smart, Simple Way to Prevent Disabling Injuries & Save Lives
When I finally had the epiphany to quit talking on my cell phone while driving because I realized that driving in pain is distracted driving, it wasn't long before it occurred to me that another way to prevent unnecessary crashes, injuries and deaths, would be to stop calling people if I know that they are driving, so I did.
And if I didn't know if they were driving, then that is my first question.
When I am told "Yes, but it's okay, I can talk, I'm hands-free."
I tell them I don't care that they're hands-free because it's a 70% mental distraction and I hang up on them.
It is really that simple!
Please do the right thing and stop taking calls from drivers and making calls when you know someone is driving. Do you want to hear the death screams of a loved one because they died driving distracted while on the phone with you?
It can wait.
It doesn't matter what it is, it can wait.
If it truly s that urgent, have them pull over and call you back.
Dear Abby,
It Can Wait!
I was beyond dismayed to read letters to Dear Abby recently in which two mom's wrote about how they love their special "talk time" with their busy daughters who would catch up with them while driving.
I hope that these mom's finally realize that there will be no talk time or anything else ever again with their daughters if and when they cause a fatal crash for themselves; or worse, for people not being irresponsible.
Odds are these moms won't stop but if and when one of their daughter's dies while driving they'll lament "Why God, why?"
This Bible Proverb is the answer to every dumb thing we do that has us asking that:
